Jump For Joy - Milan Fashion Week SS25

Surprise and delight, Milan Fashion Week SS25 brings joy to the runway.

The guests were chic as fuck and the celeb sitings were plentiful but the Milan SS25 runways had our attention, forget about the noise for a moment.

Among many, Prada, Marni, Moschino and Bottega Veneta all had a common theme this season and it was filled with unparalleled joy, a free spirit and childlike energy. I'm not talking ballet-core, quiet luxury or minimalism, we're going big and bright, and a little bit unhinged. Of course, you can wear a parka over a gown, go jogging in heels and dresses or wear a denim crown over your wavy bed hair because who cares? It was spontaneous and refreshing.

Here are 10 shows that got the message across and had great hair to match.

SUNNEI

Sunnei delivered the chicest and most interesting cast of the week - not a model younger than 70. Natural, greying hair, frizz, wrinkles, saggy skin - because guess what? Age is irrelevant, and ageing is inevitable.

A collection celebrating Sunnei's 10th year, as a reflection on the passage of time, set within a timezone a hundred years from now, it was a theatrical collection with bold prints and billowing proportions. They've ditched the anxiety about pressure and growth, trends and overthinking - and it was fun to see.

BOTTEGA VENETA

From the bunny-eared bean bags and leather-tasselled wigs to the messy hair and oversized silhouettes that enveloped the models like when you dressed up in your parent's clothes when you were a kid, it was all childlike wonder at Bottega Veneta.

Hair was that undone kind of laissez-faire look that only a hairstylist can achieve (sorry but we all know it's true); the frizzy flyaways, sleek buns and crops with hair purposely out of place leaned into the I got this out of the washing basket so it might be dirty and crinkled but it's expensive so I don't care tone of the show.

PRADA

"A sequence of concurrent realities are here the dedications to the individual, every look a unique reflection of their present."

More is more and each look brought its own personality and point of difference referencing different eras of Prada. The brief was individuality; hair was shaggy, light and fluffy, perfectly dishevelled or trimmed and tidy. Accessories were a highlight with the most talked about bug-eyed head scarves, space-age visors and goggle hats!

This is perhaps the most talked about show of the season. As always, Mrs. Prada and Raf can do no wrong and this season's unhinged energy driven by the persuasiveness of algorithms is unmatched (almost).

MOWALOLA

This was technically not in Milan but it was during MFW and the hair needs a shout-out.

Two words: Dirty Blondes - grungy, swampy and cool. Then there were the bleached fringe pieces and XL wigs, slick backs, hair tattoos, bonnets, braids and brushed-out natural hair that all complemented the beautifully dull colour palette—ranging from organic neutrals to cola reds and hot pink.

Opting for a warehouse party rather than a traditional catwalk moment, the scene was messy and fun. There was lots of skin beneath the ultra-cropped bikers, micro-minis, arm-binding tube tops, latex, sling-shot bodysuits, fur and denim.

AVAVAV

"High fashion, low performance". I thought I hated running until I saw Avavav SS25 in collaboration with Adidas.

The hair was shoved in hoods, flowing from underneath the 3-stripe caps and some from beneath organza veils, but my favourite was the blonde bimbo's in visors and headbands. A little bit Barbie and a little bit sports goth but nothing too serious.

MARNI

Marni's "essential beauty routine" saw comical pencil-thin brows arched to the hilt, voluminous bouffants and lady-like blowouts reminiscent of 1940s glam and hats galore. Flamboyant, feathered and oh so fabulous.

The show was set in a labyrinthine of chairs, facing every direction as the models walked every which way. From slender daywear to bold florals to fluttering ballgowns, Marni was a whimsical, enchanting journey from start to fin.

MOSCHINO

As always, more is more at Moschino, and this collection, dubbed "A piece of sheet" was no different. Set in a big room where washing lines were hung up, draped with gigantic white sheets.

Directing our attention to the headwear; there were denim crowns, button applique beanies, a gold foil bowler, cowboy hat and nautical-themed hats that stood out. It's a little bit on the costume-y side of the runway but it works, and why take it so seriously?

From smiley face bags, scribble polka dots on the models' skin, and child-like drawings on the back of coats to the slogan tee's and the late Judy Blame assemblage necklaces. It was all a play on bringing the mundane to life and giving it a campy, playful personality, as Moschino does best.

VERSACE

Taking it back to 1997, Versace's SS25 range was drawing on the joyful moments of the 90s - pre-internet freedom and happiness.

Beauty was cute with shiny-as-hell hair and bangs-in-your-eyes styles that flowed down the runway in bowl cuts or waist-length strands that ramped up the pretty pastels, slinky slip dresses, cardigans and denim.

MISSONI

Eccentric and avant-garde, the MO for Missoni was to reinvigorate the brand's bold artistic spirit - and they did. The zig-zag motif certainly played its role in this energetic show; as graphic patterns or 3D sculptures that folded, floated and accordioned as the model walked, represented in a purposeful, bold colour palette.

Zig-zags didn't escape hair styling either, giving the 90s/2000s hairstyle a modern and chic lease on life in a smooth, straight style or shaped through intricate braiding.

JIL SANDER

One of the darker selections in this thread but I couldn't get past the lacquer-sleek hair and sculptural bangs! A glassy wet-look always brings joy to our magpie eyes.
