It's Year of the Pop Star

By Helena Madonna

These days, in the current landscape of pop music, some of the world's biggest stars are just like us. Suffering the same icky ins and outs of situationships, obsessing over astrological moon signs and questioning their sense of self-identity in the same way we all do, who knew?

Gone are the days of Blu-Taking centre-fold pop star posters on our walls, floor to ceiling. Nowadays, we show our love and devotion through lip-syncing our fav summer anthems over get-ready-with-me reels and more commonly through recreation.

Our feeds can't escape the endless stream of 'how to' tutorials on the steps necessary to recreate our pop idols' blush placement, big blowout or perfectly quaffed curtain bangs. With just a few steps, you too can have deep cherry red strands like Dua Lipa, fluffy, waist-length curls like Charli XCX or honeybee blonde locks like Sabrina Carpenter. However, there's more to those seemingly foolproof 30-second TikTok, let me break it down for you.

Just keep scrolling, if you provide the inspo, we'll make your pop idol hair fantasies a reality.

Sabrina Carpenter

Known for her cascading golden, volume-hungry waves, Sabrina Carpenter's locks have become a visual extension of her twinkly, Disney-coded tunes. A true match made in heaven alongside her confectionary Pop Star Hair Story pop summer anthems.

Kissing the top of her pink blushed cheekbones are her fluffed, feathered curtain bangs, consistently rolled to bouncy perfection and framing her tumbling layers below. To match her beachy elegance and dimensional sun-kissed glow, ask your stylist for subtle highlights, fluttery curtain bangs and tones of face-framing layers.

Charli XCX

In a February Boiler Room set, earlier this year, Charli XCX debuted her first single from her latest album BRAT, rebranding the word itself and her image as a whole in one go. A sweaty warehouse in Bushwick helped to truly set the tone for the album line up of hot mess, it-girl ballads. It's a series of 3 am staples that act as the perfect soundtrack to the dreary ends of our long, deliriously fun nights.

Charli exaggerates her dynamic persona through the freedom of her deliciously wild curls, allowing them to do what they do best, which is to take up as much room and visual presence as possible. They command attention and evoke some serious hair envy, if you want your curls to do the same; ask for long, round layers and go light-handed with products. A little fluff only adds to the fun.

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa's infectious, disco-infused beats have flooded our radio waves and social media feeds for summers now. When she's not busy conceiving 80's pop and club culture bangers, she's busy clogging our Pinterest boards, sporting her latest hair transformation that we all can't wait to replicate.

Her most recent being the oxblood red that quickly became the hottest hue of the season. A muted but in no ways dull, colour carrying rich, deepened cherry tones that leave room for vibrancy and a bit of fun. Turn up the heat and kiss your winter blues goodbye.

Billie Eilish

Often characterised by her bold hair choices, such as her signature neon green roots, Billie Eilish as of late, has taken a simpler route. Still stunting her lavishly oversized ensembles but pairing them with more understated hairstyles. Classy, ultra-glossy and glassy, her strands allude to their lavish, expensive finish. Sporting a hue that's as dark and moody as her break-up ballads, a rich blue-black that allows her piercing blue eyes to solidify their soul-staring ability.

Haven't you heard? Gothy glam is in. Don't let that blue-black box dye tempt you into a DIY and leave it to us, so we can achieve the perfect shade of Midnight blue. Request a shine treatment (we recommend Davines Oi Liquid Luster) to guarantee a reflective, mirror-like result.

Chappell Roan

Nestled beneath her feather-lined cowboy hat and framing make-up looks that belong on the main stage of RuPaul's Drag Race, lay the auburn curls of Chappell Roan. These locks only bring more energy and power to her already dynamic stage presence. Swaying to her lush, dreamy melodies or bouncing to her disco-infused sound, they never fail to elevate her sequined, glitzy looks.

For larger-than-life curls, get your hands on a mousse you can rely on to deliver height, hold and most importantly volume. Refrain from overloading or over-layering with your products to avoid crunchy stiffness, the goal is to maximise not minimise.

Ethel Cain

From her confining upbringing in a rural Southern Baptist community, Ethel Cain emerged onto the scene with haunting blends of Southern Gothic and ethereal pop. At times, leaving clichés of pop in the dust as she embarks on her Lana Del Rey way of emotive storytelling. Taking listeners on a journey through doomed romances and vivid, almost cinematic depictions of small-town life.

Framing her smudged smokey eyes and often partially covering her forehead ink, Ethel's locks are usually styled straight and understated, allowing simplicity to be the shining factor. For minimalist elegance, opt for products that will bring subtle smoothness and weightless hydration to keep your inches healthy.

Omar Apollo

Omar Apollo's smooth vocals over his blends of bedroom pop and soul melodies have always been the comforting pillows for listeners to lay their heads whilst delving into his tales of the complexities of situationships and all that they entail. Over relaxed licks of his guitar, Apollo never fails to provide an element of effortless cool when storytelling. That effortless cool factor carries over into his style and hair choices.

Always opts for chic, classic and classy cuts but every so once in a while, he experiments with pops of bold hues. Short styles make for perfect experimentation canvas, with fewer strands to colour, daring shades such as blue are just bleach and tone away from breaking up your bland winter wardrobe.

Troye Sivan

For lack of a more accurate term, Troye Sivan's latest electro-pop anthems, flow through your bloodstream the same way a jolt of poppers would. They enforce an eclectic 'Rush' feel that's reminiscent of clinking shot glasses and the sweaty club nights that come with them.

Wild and tousled like the memories they leave behind, Sivan's curls sit in a fabulous organised chaotic manner. Tapering and tightness through the temples allow for the textured waves through the top and nape to appear intentional rather than unkempt. Ask your stylist for a mullet-like silhouette but request a soft texture to avoid harsh structure.
