Every year the Grammys take me back to being 15-years-old, poring over the looks and red carpet glam and seeing how your favourite stars chose to present themselves (often by way of trusting a stylist). The awards are the biggest night in music when the stars really come out to play, and (hopefully) serve us some out-of-the-box ensembles.
In recent times, with the growth of ‘glam squads’, the Grammys have become about seeing who has opted for ‘hotness’ or ‘make-a-statement’ beauty.
I’m always thinking of the team behind the scenes – potentially sweating in a hotel room, under time pressure, worrying how the hair and makeup will hold-up, what will it look like on the red carpet, if the star’s face going to be super-shiny come the actual event when they have to be on stage to receive an award. Argh! I always picture the makeup artist travelling with their talent right up until they walk the carpet; powdering, blotting, tweaking a lip, politely requesting the talent perhaps not to rub their lips together.
Now, in our social media world, the business of awards show beauty is even more heightened, with hair stylists and makeup artists posting about product alignments, ‘get ready with me’ content popping up all over online publications, and certain glam looks having viral moments that eventually become global trends. Phew… It’s a lot more than just looking at a still image in a magazine, like my teenage years.
This year's Grammys really gave us some gorgeous glam, with ringlet up-dos aplenty and classic nude-on-nude faces with dramatic liner and lip-lined lips. And thank goodness for Chappell Roan, bringing the magic like only she can. Here, some of my stand out beauty moments.
Chappell Perfection
Exquisite – down to resembling the print on her Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture dress for the red carpet. This makeup is near perfection: a flawless porcelain base like that? Ummm, incredible! BUT how about having a full glam change straight after walking the red carpet for an entirely new performance look?
Her makeup artist, @1800andrewdahling, has shared that he used a lip liner on both the lips and eyes to sculpt out this performance glam, using M.A.C Cosmetics Vino Lip Pencil. Round of applause for Andrew: he had his work cut out for him and man-oh-man, he delivered.
She worked with another longtime beauty collaborator, hairstylist Dom Forletta, to make her signature fire red locks look their best. "It was a very collaborative process," Dom told Fashionista. "We took the idea of amplifying Chappell's signature hair and really built on that, making it more impactful and dramatic. It was all about making sure the hair matched the intensity of the overall look."
Willow Smith
Yes. Beneath that perfectly lined lip, a fabulous set of grills.
Classic Glam for Miley
Miley’s makeup artist @jameskaliardos described the look as “Powerful Goddess”, and it surely is paired with this dream leather Saint Laurent dress. A big ol’ winged liner, golden eyes and peach nude lip using Maybelline Lifter Liner in On It and Line Leader, followed by Superstay Teddy Tint in Knee High.
Her hair was styled in the "jelly fish" cut, with its blunt pieces hitting the chin and charmingly skew-whiff fringe - plus 2000s-esque chunky highlights, created by her hairstylist Bob Recine.
Kehlani
There were multiple 90s-style lined lips this year at the Grammys – is it here to stay for the duration of the awards season? Will we continue to see the lined lip totally crisp and blunt, not blended out, just finished off with a touch of gloss ala Kehlani?!
The singer's hair was styled in classic old Hollywood waves with a dramatic side part finished with gel, by hairstylist Quran Smith.
Alicia Keys
If I can take my eyes off of those fabulous ear pieces long enough, I can look at the beautiful hair detail: intricate braiding all round the scalp, a meticulous updo and fishtail braid. Paired with her signature fresh skin: god damn! If we can please get Alicia’s secret for her insane skin, I’d happily take up her routine.
Lady Gaga
Thank you Gaga for bringing THE FACE. Perfect bleach brow, a wispy false lash, and a cute little stained lip. I have a feeling this lip stain might have a moment in beauty trends this year. Lady Gaga’s permanent makeup artist @sarahtannomakeup created this goth beat using all Haus Labs products, of course.
Beautifully framed with a choppy fringe and long bangs around the face; a similar "jelly fish" cut to Miley but in dramatic jet black. Gaga works regularly with Frederic “Freddie” Aspiras on her hair and wigs.
Sabrina Carpenter
This is a cute lil’ curly Sue moment by hairstylist Evanie Frausto, who created a faux bob style by pinning Sabrina's hair into a French twist and leaving her fringe and some curls around the face. Evanie described it as a "perfect balance of glamour and spontaneity, like the effortlessly sexy aftermath of a night out".
And you best believe that I am always here for Sabrina’s constant love for a flushed cheek. Not only does it give her so much colour on the red carpet, but comes to life when she’s on stage too. For anyone wondering, that lip is Prada Monochrome Lipstick B101 Tiepolo with B11 Alabaster in the centre.
Rapsody
Yay for a graphic eye – with a touch of turquoise shimmer through the centre of the eyelid, and purple winged accents. Channeling Grace Jones, Rapsody worked with her makeup artist Kierra Lanice to pick out a colour palette and create a dramatic look to frame her eyes.
Hot tip: she has used Danessa Myricks Freedom Palette on those eyes. Teamed with a draping crystal headpiece in lieu of a hair look.
