Skincare is fun - when you’ve got an arsenal of delicious products sitting in your bathroom cupboard, its easy to impulsively slather on whatever your heart desires and just trust the skincare gods to do the rest. Though when you have dry skin, it’s important to remember that your skin is after some real TLC and there are some key things look out for to make sure your products are doing what you actually need them to.
Dry skin is the result of a damaged moisture barrier, wherein the skin has developed invisible cracks that allow moisture to escape and irritants to come in. With this outermost layer weakened, the skin isn’t able to maintain hydration properly and can’t protect itself from the environment as well as it needs to.
In addition to the invisible cracks, dry skin types can also often form patches of flaky or rough skin or lead into fine lines or deep cracks that can bleed.
Our natural skin barrier helps to lock in moisture, however a lot of different factors can interfere with this such as genetics, environmental factors like low humidity, cold temperatures and changing seasons, or even just using the wrong products, irritating your skin.
For those who struggle with dry, flaky, or dehydrated skin, it’s important to put the focus on quenching and protecting your skin in order to restore a healthy moisture barrier.
LOCKED AND LOADED
You’ll want to equip yourself with products that keep moisture in, and harmful UV rays and free radicals out.
Some ingredients to look out for are plant-based oils like rosehip oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil. These ingredients mimic the natural lipids in your skin and work to repair your skin’s moisture barrier.
Antioxidant-rich formulas are your besties, look for vitamins E, A, and C in the form of serums and oils for a super concentrated hit.
Hyaluronic Acid is a must-have for dry skin types as well, to leave your face feeling super supple and fresh. Hyaluronic Acid is a well-known humectant for the skin, pulling water towards it and filling in fine lines.
Niancinamide and Squalane are great too, as these guys have built a rep for their ability to repair and promote a healthy, happy skin barrier.
Always remember to throw on an SPF before leaving the house too ;)
AM
STEP 1: OIL CLEANSER
Oil cleansers are awesome for dry skin as they’re able to cleanse without stripping away any natural oils. They tend to be milder than those that foam or lather, and can help keep dry skin feel moist even right after washing. Apply directly onto dry skin and massage the oil in for about a minute, then add water to emulsify the oil into a milk that can be easily rinsed off.
STEP 2: ANTIOXIDANT SERUM
The goal of your AM routine should be to protect your skin from the outside world, essentially. You’ll want to make sure to use an antioxidant serum in the morning, to help fight damage caused by free radicals as well as prevent collagen breakdown. This water-like serum from Salt By Hendrix is dense in antioxidants, featuring a hefty dose of Vitamin C alongside other awesome botanicals like Kakadu Plum.

STEP 2: HYDRATING MASK
For dry skin types who are no stranger to seeing flakes on their face, the knee-jerk reflex may be to exfoliate them away. However, your skin is better off getting more of what it yearns for: hydration.

Follow up with a serum to help replenish skin at night too.
STEP 4: PROBIOTIC SERUM
