A Palm Royale Glow Up

By Kiekie Stanners

’The Palm Royale represents a deep conviction that beauty is not dead’ claims Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons (played by Kristen Wiig) in the new Apple TV+ series Palm Royale. The period comedy, set in 1969 Palm Beach, Florida is a visual delight of hair/makeup/styling and set design. The aesthetic vision - a Slim Aaron’s photograph come to life.

The series makeup designer Tricia Sawyer, has gone all-out-glamour and over-the-top tanned for her makeup direction. Think ultra-bronzed and glossy, periwinkle blue eyeshadow, frosted-pink almond nails and of course the perfect sixties coral lipstick.

Hair Department lead Karen Bartek, alongside Sawyer, worked closely with costume designer Alex Friedberg to create the vibrant and colourful visual world Palm Royale is set in. Most of the costume department is sourced original vintage from the 70’s, making it even more visually beautiful and true to the period.

Bartek’s work on lead character Maxine is a little tongue-in-cheek and over-the-top to match the characters ambitious nature. Perfectly coiffed-curls, a little mini backcombed beehive and a ‘more is more’ approach to her wigs. Whilst Maxine is winging her way into trouble and trying to fit in within the Palm Royale members-only club, her hair is not an inch out of place - making sure she immaculately looks the part to fit in, and staying true to this character throughout the season.

Allison Janney’s character Evelyn, THE lady of the Palm Royale, has some of the most fabulous wigs in cinema we’ve seen in a while. The volume, the sets, the perfect curls are a star of the show all by themselves! Not to mention her frosted baby-blue eyeshadow, lashes and candy-floss pink lip, created by her makeup artist Marie Delprete.

Maxine’s blow-out needs some serious hair tools to get that shine, volume and perfect flick! Colleen suggests:

R+Co Trophy Shine and Texture Spray:
THE big hair luxury spray, adding volume, texture and high shine to your Ms Dellacorte-Simmons curls.

R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray:
Vicious by name and vicious by strong-hold spray. Even if you are stumbling over fences like Maxine, those curls won’t drop.

Oribe Cote d’Azure Luminous Hair and Body Oil:
A fast-absorbing hair and body oil, that locks in moisture for smooth-looking curls, with the signature Oribe fragranced scent.

Parlux Light 385 Black:
Create your ’69 blow-out of your dreams using the Parlux hairdryer, an extremely lightweight salon-style blow dryer with 2150 watts of power.

Flashes of oiled up skin, and silky golden tresses helps Maxine fit into the country club of her dreams and absolutely look the part. Colleen suggests:

Tronque Fully Ripe Vitamin C Body Oil:
An oiled-up, topless Ricky Martin, playing Robert the pool boy, is all the inspiration we need to reach for body oil to keep winter skin at bay. The Tronque body oil smoothes and plumps dehydrated skin, and works over time to fade pigmentation, prevent and reduce stretch marks and boost elasticity.

Containing Vitamin C THD (50x more effective than L-Asorbic Acid) which penetrates right to the dermis to slow skin aging. I think Ricky must have been using this body oil his whole life...

Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine:
Get fabulous high-shine hair at the same time as giving it a lush treatment. Shimmer Shine is a lightweight mist that contains Vitamin C, E and Bamboo Extract to treat the hair, whilst light reflective technology adds a gold shimmer to your strands.

The perfect product to have the sun bouncing off your blow-out, so you too can pretend you are lazing in the Florida sun.

Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo:
Extend your blowout and absorb any product build-up with the Oribe transformative dry shampoo. Palm Royale’s department lead, Karen Bartek, has explained the heat that they were working into film was intense and half the hard work was down to keeping the hair from getting greasy throughout long shoot days.

Oribe Gold Lust would work a dream in both humid environments and need to maintain an up-do for a period of time.

Not once does Maxine’s hair have a strand out of place, keeping her Palm Royal charade in check - Colleen suggests these tools to get you set from sunrise:

GHD Unplugged Black:
Hair smoothing on the go with GHD’s cordless straightener. How dreamy to sit around the pool all day and be able to pull out your straighteners for a quick smoothing touch-up or curl lift! The cordless GHD provides 20 minutes of continuous use once fully charged and takes only 45 seconds heat-up time.

GHD Curve Soft Curl Tong:
Mitzi’s showgirl curls need some serious holding power, so get onto the Soft Curl Tong by GHD. Soft bouncy curls and volume that lasts with the 32mm barrel tong.

Noto Multi-Bene Stains Touch:
The perfect coral shade for lips and cheeks. The texture of the Multi-Bene colours is a glossy balm-like finish so perfect to team with your golden tan and flowing kaftan.
